Eight alternative reasons to visit Athens from travel bloggers

There’s more to Athens than The Acropolis

The Acropolis, is without a doubt, one of the world’s greatest landmarks and one of the pillars of an Athens visit. But there is more to the city than this hilltop wonder. Trips100 bloggers, with a keen eye for a travel adventure, provide an alternative itinerary…

Acropolis aside, Athens history and culture is, unsurprisingly, top of many Trips100 travel bloggers’ agendas. Some recommend using local guides and tours as a short cut to covering this vast city in a  few days.  Emily at Emily Luxton Travels delved straight into the history of several neighbourhoods by taking a four hour Alternative Athens Walking Tour with both well known and unusual sights seamlessly woven in to the chat.

World Wide Writer Karen Warren has plenty of blog posts offering ideas for culture, from a tour of early Byzantine churches to her quest to find the rock church of St Isidore (or Isidorus). We really like her review of a Literary Tour of the city.

Unsurprisingly Krista from Passport Delicious immediately signed up on a food tour as part of 2.5 days in Athens that dropped her in the city at 3am. She also wandered independently and engagingly – sampling everything from cod to the drink of the Gods.

Meanwhile Jaklien from Passport and toothbrush decided her best option was to simply wander around and see what delights she might stumble across. Everything from street art to quirky shops. Athens is one of those cities where you can do that in just one afternoon.

Athens isn’t just for adults. Nisbah from Five Adventurers took her kids to the Panatheniac Stadium where they had a race on hallowed (or rather marbled) Olympic ground. Check out this post; the photo’s take you right there. And on the way home she checks out the play facilities at Athens Airport If you have babies or toddlers, and plan a trip to the Greek capital, this might interest you.

In her post looking at things to do with kids in Athens, Gretta from Mums do Travel picked out a few interesting and child friendly museums including one with 900 shadow puppets. She also explored some ideas for an outdoor adventure including a sea turtle rescue centre, the zoological gardens and the joyful sounding ‘happy train.’

Tikki Chris spent pretty much all of his short time in Athens outdoors from the sound of his blogtrotting post and even managed a trip to the beach.

Podcast fans will enjoy listening to blogger Gary Bembridge’s insights, observations and tips on the museums and outdoor areas of the Greek capital.

Whether its cultural, historical, ‘Acropalyptical’ or just plain practical we’d love to hear your recommendations for a stay in Athens. Do leave a comment below.
