Idaho might not be the first destination you think of when planning a trip to the US, but if you’re a fan of stunning scenery, action-packed adventure sports and something a bit different, then Idaho definitely deserves to be on your shortlist of destinations. Whether you want to try white water rafting or spend an evening at the ballet – you can do a lot of surprising things in Idaho!

Whitewater Rafting

Did you know that Idaho has more whitewater river miles than any other of the lower 48 states? That means if you’re into serious thrills when you’re white water rafting, then there’s no better place to visit. There are trails and trips to suit different itineraries, from short half-day taster experiences to longer, six day trails for more experienced or ambitious sailors.

Natural Attractions

Want to get back to nature? Idaho is a nature lover’s wonderland, from lush forests, awe-inspiring peaks and waterfalls. A particular highlight is the 115-mile Sawtooth Scenic Byway, which snakes through the centre of the state, along the edge of the Sawtooth Mountains. Expect to see scenic towns, canyons, rivers, streams and lakes – with plenty of places to stop explore the scenery and plentiful caves. Idaho is also apparently one of the world’s best places for fly fishing!

Summer Resorts

America has always known how to cater to the traveller that wants to relax and kick back after a day in the great outdoors. The state of Idaho has a number of world-class summer resorts where everything is laid on, alongside luxury accommodation and friendly service. One of the most highly recommended, the Coeur d’Alene Resort, is set on Lake Coeur d’Alene and boasts spectacular lakeside views. The Teton Springs Resort, on the Teton Mountain Range in Victor, offers luxurious accommodations, skiing and golfing.

Wineries

Wine in Idaho you say? You betcha! The wine industry in Idaho is new, and just waiting to be discovered by the intrepid explorer. The first vines were planted in the early 1970’s but don’t let that put you off. There are over 20 wineries and vineyards and Idaho’s Sunny Slope is where you can tour small, appointment-only cellars to enjoy tastings as well as a delicious meal.

Horseback Riding

Sooner or later, in Idaho, you’re going to find yourself on horseback. And there’s almost nowhere better in the world to have your real-life cowboy experience. There are hundreds of miles of trails, and ranches offering day trips, and accommodation for guests. Dont’ forget to check out the hay rides and cattle round-ups for the full Wild West adventure!

Camping

With so much open space and amazing scenery, we reckon the best way to see Idaho up and close is by staying under canvas. Why not head for Hell’s Canyon, America’s deepest gorge, where you can sail into your camp by raft or kayak,m and camp alongside the trail? It shouldn’t surprise you that there’s a huge choice of camping options here, from luxury lodges to yurts.

Skiing

Sun Valley in Idaho is rightly world-famous for its outdoor recreation and awesome mountain scenery, year round. But in winter, the area comes into its own with incredible downhill and cross-country skiing, skating and snowmobiling. There are special events and festivals galore, and a well-established resort community, with hotels and lodging to suit all budgets.

Return flights to Boise, Idaho from London Gatwick airport are available via multiple airlines, from around £600. The warmest weather tends to be from June-September, although winter sports are available in the ski season. Also, in Idaho, the law forbids you from giving anyone a box of candy that weighs more than 50 pounds.
